Thyroid disorder - Renew Medical Clinic

What is thyroid disorder?

The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. It is responsible for producing two main hormones - thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones help regulate metabolism, growth, development, and temperature regulation.

Thyroid disorders occur when the thyroid gland does not function properly. The two main types of thyroid disorders are:

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. It is an autoimmune disorder where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and damage. This limits the thyroid's ability to produce hormones.

Graves' disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. It is also an autoimmune disorder that causes the body to produce antibodies that overstimulate the thyroid, leading to excess hormone production.

Thyroid disorders can be diagnosed with a simple blood test that measures levels of TSH, T4, and T3. Imaging tests like an ultrasound may also be done to look at the structure of the thyroid gland.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the disorder. Hypothyroidism is treated with daily synthetic thyroid hormone medication like levothyroxine. This replaces the hormones the thyroid can no longer produce. Hyperthyroidism may be treated with medications to block or reduce thyroid hormone production, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgery to remove part of the thyroid.
